Audiences and Institutions Practice Essay

Assess the importance of marketing in the media area you have studied?

Marketing of a film is vital for any movie. Whether they are trailers, merchandise, or cross platforming.Marketing is needed to get the word out about movies.

Movie trailers, cross platforming, and synergy are the best ways to market any film. It was especially helpful for the black panther movie, they had trailers at the NBA finals game, Marvel Studios hosted a New York Fashion Week event, where pieces inspired by the movie were presented and showcased, also Lexus partnered with Black Panther and revealed a special commercial for the 2018 Lexus LS 500, a new car that drew inspiration from the movie. The movie also had BET release reruns of the old animated series black panther, to have the idea of black panther run through people's minds as they stare endlessly at the tv. Another film that did this was the 2017 live action Beauty and the beast,They had the old animated Disney film of Beauty and the Beast play more often to create the same effect that Black Panther did.

Merchandising is a very profitable thing for a film before and after the release of the movie. Every major film usal creates clothing, toys and other items for purchase. Spider-man Homecoming had a cross platforming with the movie which gave them a great spread of the movie. The movie also had release action figures and t-shirts of the movie before it was released as a marketing strategy. Also the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 had a variety of merchandise, from water bottles to their own monopoly. This movie spoiled people with products from the film.

Another beneficial factor for films can be food and music. Guardians of the galaxy Vol.2 had a very popular soundtrack mix which had some catchy songs and sold well. Black Panther also did this with Kendrick Lamar,The Weekend, and Khalid. These are some very popular artists, which helped the movie in selling products and advertising their movie. Guardian and the Galaxy also partnered with a lot of food companies  such as M&M, Go-Gurt, and Dairy queen which gave them their own flavor of ice cream

To conclude, Marketing is a very important part of any film. With these types of marketing the films have made a good amount of money Black Panther with 1.344 billion, Spider-man Homecoming with 880,166,350 dollars, Beauty and the Beast(2017 version) with 1.3billion, and Guardians and the Galaxy Vol.2 with 863,756,051 dollars.

CCR: Pompano Lab

The CCR was a long and sort of fun process. The filming was very painful and hot. When filming I had to sit out side in the sun, while I was wearing a suit jacket. Also when filming my responses that was very hard. I tried to have at least three minutes for each response. Some responses were too short so I had to make other responses longer. It was also fun and entertaining to interview myself. I felt professional when came up with my responses. The editing was fun, the intro and outro were the best part. I had my dog in both the intro and outro, I also had a end credit scene with my dog in the background.

Final task:Birch Slayer

The movie was a long and fun process. It all began in class we needed to come up with a plot for a movie. My group and I took time to go home and brainstorm of one. On my way to school is when I came up with the plot of two people walking down a trail. On their way to a party, when little do they know they are about to get killed. At school my group and I all said our ideas. After we all discussed we came down to my plot. Then later we came up with the title the Birch Slayer. Our other film plot ideas were gonna be two people held hostage and then someone walks in, but we don't show its face. That was gonna be to complicated so that is why we did not do it. Another plot was a girl running from something then hides in an empty bathroom but the thing follows her. This was also to complicated and a lot of effort. Also we didn't have a car which was another factor. The process was was through the entire filming. We filmed at Birch State park. Just like our music video. This was our ideal location for this film. Each day we came up with different for shot and angles of each scene. The editing was the painful part, we had to go through five different software until we found the right one. Overall this entire process was so much fun.

Editing blog:Adding titles

Now we were on the last step. Which was adding the titles. Titles are very hard thing too do, but I think its very fun. For Kendrid he didn't think it was very fun. He said it was very hard for him, but since it was the last thing he was determined to get it done. Same process as before, loaded up the project, the transitions, and music. Before he started he told us that he was almost done and was on the hardest part. We told him we are there if he needs us. He had to put the titles in a certain order which he realized. He panicked for a little because he couldn't find the order.

After he started losing hope, he found the order of the titles. If he could not find the titles we would all be in trouble. So to add titles he clicked on the add text button. It took him a while to figure it out, but eventually got the hang of it. He tried and find the scariest font he could find. Then he picked the right size and font size for the titles. It was between 15-24 due to the amount of text in a title. The color variation he chose was red, yellow, black, and orange. He then placed the titles in a nice position for each of them and added movements. He liked it so much he recorded it and sent it to us through the phone.

Editing blog:transitions and music

It was time for the next step. This part was not too hard to do. Kendrid had a plan to get most of the work done so he didn't have that much work the next day. So that is what we did and go right to it.We open the project and loaded everything in. First thing we did was re-watch the film and decided what needed transitions. Kendrid found adding animations and transitions were fun, but I personally like the video effects. I like watching and playing around with video effects and see what works best. Also like to know what they do so I could use it in a different project. Kendrid found where he wanted the transitions.

He checked with us about the transitions, we told him to just make sure it looks good and what ever feels right. So after that he checked the transitions and saw how many there were to choose from. There weren't that many, but it had the basics. The top rated ones were checkerboard, horizontal lines, and dissolve puzzle. After picking the transitions he let them load in and watched how they fit with the movie.According to Kendrid it looked nice and we all agreed. Since the transitions were all done we needed the music now. He went to add audio files and chose from the ones he downloaded. The first one was a happy one for the beginning which was called "happy days." Then he got a scary one for when the killer appeared called "Curse of the Clown" which was the one I found. After that he adjusted the audio mix and was all done with that part.

Editing blog:Putting it all together

After we found Videopad Editor we start to edit the film. First thing we did was take all the footage that we had and uploaded to the software. Even the extra footage we did  not really need. We just had it there just in case. The editor was slow at the beginning defiantly not as slow as Pinnacle Studios. Pinnacle Studios is probably the slowest of all softwares. We had a little incident, when Kendrid imported all the files he clicked one too many. As a result he had to watch each one and make sure that it was the correct one. Sometimes he would have us watch them to be 100% sure. Eventually we gone through them all.
Some of the footage that were extras we would use as fillers. Just so we can make the time requirement. After thirty minutes everything was fully uploaded and rendered in. Some the footage was too short or had no purpose. Those got removed from the main pile. After finish cleaning up, we dragged the footage in the correct order. When putting the videos in the timeline there was a wait for the videos to load in.The videos finished loading,so we watched the videos and trimmed the parts that needed it. The trimming process was not long and when it was done we watched it again. The video looked and was ready for the next step.

Re-edit blog:Videopad Video Editor

When school was still open, my group-mates and I were coming into the editing phase. We already had most of the footage already put together. We first had all the footage put together in Pinnacle studios. This was the first editing software out of many. When we all heard that schools were going to be temporally closed due to the virus. We all knew this was going to be a big wrench in our plans. So we trust Kendrid with the movie. He was going to finish up the editing and we would call or face time. We did this to help and insert our feedback. We all watched what we had put together of the movie. Pointed out the goods, bad, and what could be improved on.

This was going great until we got to our first problem. The Pinnacle Studios that we usually used was only accessible on school computers. So we searched for free editing software. We would download and test export our videos. The first couple of software we used had water marks or we had to pay to export. Then eventually we found a software call Videopad Video Editor. This editor was easy and simple to use. It also had a ton of great features to use. We imported all the new shots and videos that we re-shot. Put it all together and then brainstormed what we needed next.

filming blog:The one where they can't film

This Wednesday we were supposed to film. Also supposed to re-shoot some of our shots. Then our lucky just gets better. Turns out Jack is going to Utah. So our plans have been put on hold. Jack is a main character. Filming with out him will be pointless. There is only one shot that is just me and Kendrid. Jack is a vital part of the film, everyone is. But we figured out what we were going to do.
Right now Kendrid and I have been editing the film. While Jack helps with the music. Also Jack is like our test audience he watches the film and certain scenes. Then tells us what was good and bad, and what can be improved on. Kendrid and I are going to use the shots and videos we already have for the film. Then when we can we will film the other scenes we need. With the virus going around its going to be hard to do much. The park might be closed or our parents might not want us out. But we can always find another location and trick the camera. The picture below is a scene w will need with jack.

filming blog:Nathan's day off

On Friday Our group wanted to film. Everything was set and ready to go. We were going to have my mom drive us down to the park. Then it happened, the worst thing that could possibly happen. I had chipped my tooth. This was not the firs time for this to happen. I have chipped my tooth before many times and all an accident. I first chipped my tooth due to an phone that had an outer-box case.Someone threw the phone at me and it chipped my tooth right in half. Then the other times it broke cause of something hitting it or me eating and breaking the bond.
So I was not able to film. Because I had to go to a dentist appointment. My other group mates only could get one shot. Since I was not there to do the dialogue. They went to a place that was not the park. They could only film the shot reverse shot, so they did. Now over the weekend we filmed the dialogue scenes at the park. We had people going in and out the trail so we had to re-shoot a lot. Afterwards we packed up and headed out the park for some fun. We first walked to 7-11, then galleria mall, and then finished up our day playing basketball at Holiday park.

editing blog: try try and try again

After the we re-shot we had the time to re-edit in class. So as any normal editing day would go we walked into class and grabbed a computer. Sat down and logged into the computer. We clicked on our editing software and waited for it to load. As we waited we saw the software was taking longer than usual to load up. Thinking nothing of it we just waited longer. The software look like it loading in all the stuff, but little did we know. Watching the software load the start of our nightmare appeared. The software wasn't loading, a notification popped up and said it wasn't working. So as the problem solvers we were, we grabbed another computer.
We did the exact same thing like last time. logged in, clicked on the software, and waited. Guess what happened, the same little notification popped up. Now my group members and I started to worry. So we grabbed two computers and see which one would work first. Same process: logged in, clicked on the software and waited. My guess was that computers decided not to like us that day. both computers didn't work. repeating the same process we grabbed another two computers and etc. One computer decided to quit, but the other one liked us and was working. With just our lucky though, the computer had 10 minutes of battery left. With a group decision we stayed for study-hall was able to find a computer that work. We got all of the new shots in and inputted the music.

Re-shoot blog: Re-shoot,Reduce, and Recycle

Last week we re-shot our film. We got the necessary shots first then re-shot any other things that we felt was needed. From the peer review we shot extra scenes to get certain actions and shots. When we re-edit we will make it a little more dimmer to set the feeling. Just like what our peer review people told us. While we were filming I recorded with my phone and messed up a couple shots because of the way I was holding the camera. So we will need to find a day this week where we can get these shots. But we are thinking of filming at a different location which is closer than the park. Such as a grassy area with lots of trees to gain the same affect of the park. We will film this soon and quick since it requires only one cast member.
While we were re-shooting there were not as many mosquitoes. We also recorded on a half day. So when school got out, we all grab lunched then headed straight for the park. Maybe since it was early in the afternoon that the mosquitoes were not out or terrible like last time. Filming as always was a blast. We got all the movie done and all the shots re-shot. When recording our finishing scene Jack had to lay on the floor, since he was 'dead.' He was not so happy about this. So to piss him off even more, as a joke we made him lay on the ground even longer for a picture for the blog. He got even more mad, here it is down below.

Peer review: Butter-bean

Last class we had the opportunity to watch other people's videos. We were assigned a group and a different group was assigned to watch ours. While we watch we had to look and answer questions for a peer review paper. The name of the video we watched was called Butter-bean. While we watched the film there were certain things we needed to spot. Some things we had to look for was shots, sound, titles, etc. The group did good overall,But was missing  decent amount. Their time was 1:30 and their plot was really confusing. My group and I did not understand the movie one bit. Their acting was pretty decent though.
Each group member had to do our own individual peer review paper. Their movie wasn't complete. When it is fully finish I think it will be a lot better than what we saw. Their movie made us realize that we were missing stuff in our video too. Some things we will need are shots and angles. One thing we need is shot reverse shot. Which I have the perfect idea for what we will do. I will have a shot of jack then a piece of paper then back to Jack. This will also give the scene dialogue. Overall the film was very helpful too us and by us giving them feedback it will be helpful to them.

Filming blog: attack of the mosquitoes

My group members and I have filmed once again. Finishing up the shots so we have a general concept of what our movie will look like. When we put our movie altogether we will see what is needed. Also Next class my group and I will edit and clean up all of our shots. After school our group had my mom take us to Hugh Taylor Birch state park. When we got to the park we headed straight towards our filming location to get started right away. As we started filming the mosquitoes came out from bushes. Gladly I had brought bug spray because what happen last time. As my group mates and I drenched our selves in bug spray we got ready to film. Little did we know we were in for a treat.
We started filming the movie and got a lot of shots. As the sun  went down the mosquitoes got worst and worst by the minute. We kept coating ourselves in bug spray one after another. Sadly none of it was working though. The filming continued the mosquitoes kept attacking. Like soldiers the group kept filming until we got to our final scene. When we finished up with our filming we rushed to our stuff and got out of the park as quickly as possible. Jack got picked up first by his mom, Kendrid got picked up by his brother and I waited until Kendrid was picked up then I left with my dad. The next day I looked at my arms and legs to see all of these mosquito bites. Next we film we are bringing stronger bug spray and wearing longer clothing, also to get any shots we might need or were missing.
Kendrid was our killer for the movie.

filming blog: stroll through the park

This past weekend my group and I have filmed a good amount for our project. I am excited for the next time we film again. It was a blast recording with my group mates and they would agree. At the sometime we were all also very productive in getting our work done. While we were recording I got a couple of cuts. So to avoid any infections we used the first aid kit that we brought with us. Another annoying problem that cut our filming time short were the mosquitoes. They were absolutely terrible, so next time will be prepared with bug spray. We decided to film at Hugh Taylor Birch state park. When we got there we spent a good amount of time finding a filming spot.
Originally we were going to film on the road inside the park. But since it was the weekend cars and people kept passing by so it was really hard to film consistently. Every time a car or person would come by we had to wait and stop filming. So we decided to go to our second filming location. Our second location was a trail that did not have as many people. This made it a lot easier to film our scenes. For one shot I had to climb a tree and it was very well worth it. Due to me climbing the tree this is also how I got my cuts. Over all the filming went great and we had all of the necessary props needed. Here is a picture of a scene that we filmed down below.

Filming blog:setting up

The filming process has begun, all of our skills are being put to the final task. Our horror movie will be a film to be remember. We have been deciding a lot of things before we actually film. First is the location, we are looking at different parks and places that have long roads or empty roads. The two places we have so far are Hugh Taylor Birch State park and Holiday park. Second thing were the actors, we are still figuring out who we want to be our killer and innocents. We want a certain type of people to be actors A and B. If we can not find these actors me and Jack will be and Kendrid will be the killer. The third thing we have are props: mask, clothing, and etc. I will be providing the mask which will be an insane asylum muzzle.

This weekend we will be recording at one of the parks. I would like to go to Hugh Taylor park. But I do not know what everyone else is going to decide on. Another factor that I am curious to find out is the costume for the Killer. What I wanna do is have messy hair and the muzzle show nothing else of the killer. Kendrid is going to be our killer which I find to be a perfect choice. When Kendrid is not our killer he is going to be a camera man. Same situation with me, when I am not on screen I will be directing. When Kendrid is on the screen Jack will be our camera man or me, we will have to play our parts as a camera man. Overall I am excited for this weekend and other filming days to come.
This is a picture of Holiday park, a potential filming location.

planning blog:story time

For this part of planning for our film, we had to make a storyboard. The storyboard is basically a little sentence and picture of everything that will be in our film. The storyboard paper that we used has six boxes on each of them, and we used ten of them. Since there are 10 scenes in the opening of our movie, each individual paper is a scene. To help us out with forming this storyboard, we used our previous Power Points. These Power Points are the shooting script, sound script, and title blog. The shooting script was the most helpful one to use, because it was pretty much a storyboard itself without pictures. The sound script was helpful in letting us know what the characters say. The title blog was helpful in knowing what our titles will be. Storyboards are important because they make creating a film easier to do.

planing: grain field butcher

Today we started to do a power-point. The power-point was on all the titles we will have in our film. This is helpful because when we need to add the titles to the film all we have to do is look at what we wrote and edit into the film. It consists of things like the studio and production company, actors and film title, music by and edited by,etc. It is important so people watching the film know who did what. This is helpful to the viewer if they don't know who the actor is. This is important because you need to give the people credit for the job they did. When people watch movies it is good to know who the person is. This way if you like the actor you can watch more movies with him in it. This is why you need titles.

planning blog:schedule

New power-point today. This time we were doing it about planning the schedule. If you don't plan then how do you know what to do. It shows where we're going to film. We had many places to choose from but only two met our eye. Holiday park and Hugh Taylor Birch state park. these two places meet our requirements. This is why you need to know where you're going to film before you film. If we didn't do this we could've been driving around for hours. This is why it's important to schedule and know when, where, and who you will be filming.

planning blog: shooting script

This presentation is the script of our movie. It includes everything that will be going on in the opening sequences of our film. Each scene in the film is its own separate slide. All of the slides have its own detailed material. For the most part, the slides consist of whats happening in each scene, different camera angles and the titles. Including these things in the slides will make it easier for us to know what camera angles, movements and shots to use. Without those various camera angles, our film would be dull and bland. We are doing this shooting script, as a little outline of what the beginning our film will be about. Breaking the scenes into its own slide makes the process easier. What's on the presentation is kind of like a rough draft, because somethings may change throughout this process.
